In the last three months I have read several financial publications that mention that Financial Advisors are abandoning the "Buy and Hold" Strategy and recommending "Alternative" Investments to their clients. Especially of interest, was a headline in April 29th Wall Street Journal that stated,
"Advisers
Ditch 'Buy and Hold' For New Tactics.
Facing Angry Clients, Pros Turn to 'Alternative' Products"
The article went on to mention a few of the Alternative Products as investments that trade Currencies (Forex) and Futures.
Frankly, I'm amazed. The mainstream investment professionals and Wall Street for years have rarely acknowledged these trillion dollar markets. These alternative markets were never introduced to me in my training as a Certified Financial Planner or in my Securities Training and Licensing and are still not included in standard investment advisor training.
Of course, now that many growth mutual funds (including IRAs and 401ks) have often lost up to 50% of their value in the last year and one half, many professional advisors are now seeking other alternatives for their clients. What these advisors labeled as investments "safe" from risk exposure, shocked them when they saw up to 50% losses.
As I have mentioned before, growth mutual funds present some inherent obstacles to you accumulating wealth rapidly.
My biggest concerns are that growth mutual funds:
- Are required to stay fully invested even when the managers project years of market declines (which leaves your funds vulnerable to losses).
- Have non-transparent fees even during losses (fee disclosures are lumped all together).
- Have historically underperformed.
- Often take a number of years to rebound.
- Have a conflict of interest with the advisor's advice to the client (advisors usually only receive compensation when you are fully invested and not sitting in cash).
So, I am thrilled the financial mainstream is finally acknowledging the Alternative Financial markets as an opportunity to help their client's recoup their stock market and real estate losses. (Of course, it may still be years before most financial advisors offer these opportunities, because until mainstream financial institutions directly offer these products, advisors and institutions have no way to profit from these Alternative Products.)
