Everyone has been asking me, "Should I sell my stocks and mutual funds now that they have lost about 30%?". Well, that depends. The "Experts" tell you to leave them where they are if you don't need them in the next 5-10 years. But, really, they aren't addressing the real problem of how to leave them there and still have enough to retire when you wanted.

The average down market lasts about 33 months, so if you leave your stock and mutual funds sitting there in a down market for another 33 months, you are losing precious time. If you want to get to your retirement date in a reasonable amount of time, you can't keep losing 30% of your principal every 5-7 years sitting in a down market. Your Down market will take 1-3 years and you will both lose a large portion of what you've managed to accumulate so far, and delay any chance of retiring when you planned. This should be your call to action to stop losing your principal during down markets and get consistent monthly income from now until your retirement date!
